It can cause abdominal pain, usually in the left lower abdomen.<\/p><p>Other symptoms of diverticulitis include:<\/p><ul><li>Diarrhoea or constipation.<\/li><li>Nausea.<\/li><li>Vomiting.<\/li><li>Chills or fever.<\/li><\/ul><pre>\u00a0<\/pre><p><strong>5 Appendicitis<\/strong><\/p><p>Appendicitis is inflammation of the appendix. It often occurs alongside bowel movements and can manifest as constipation or diarrhoea.<\/p><p>Other common symptoms include:<\/p><ul><li>Bloating.<\/li><li>Feeling that the bowel movement is incomplete (feeling that you have not completely emptied the stool).<\/li><li>Mucus in the stool.<\/li><\/ul><pre>\u00a0<\/pre><p><strong>8 Gastroesophageal reflux or regurgitation<\/strong><\/p><p>Gastroesophageal reflux (acid reflux) or regurgitation is the expulsion of stomach acid into the oesophagus and\/or pharynx.<\/p><p>It most often occurs briefly, after eating, and causes burning pain behind the breastbone.<\/p><p>Acid reflux can also cause:<\/p><ul><li>Abdominal pain.<\/li><li>Difficulty swallowing.<\/li><li>Bloating.<\/li><li>Nausea.<\/li><li>Belching.<\/li><\/ul><pre>\u00a0<\/pre><p><strong>9 Constipation <\/strong><\/p><p>Constipation increases pressure on the large intestine, which can cause abdominal pain.<\/p><p>Constipation can occur for many reasons, the most common are:<\/p><ul><li>Too little <a href=\"https:\/\/dietsabc.com\/en\/healthy-diet\/dietary-fibre\/\">fibre<\/a> or fluid in the diet.<\/li><li>Low levels of <a href=\"https:\/\/dietsabc.com\/en\/sport\/physical-activity-and-healthy-weight\/\">physical activity<\/a>.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.news-medical.net\/health\/Drugs-that-Cause-Constipation.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Taking certain medications<\/a>.<\/li><li>Pregnancy.<\/li><\/ul><pre>\u00a0<\/pre><p>Constipation can also be a sign of a neurological disorder or bowel obstruction, so if constipation is frequent or long-lasting &#8211; consult a doctor.<\/p><pre>\u00a0<\/pre><p><strong>10 Food intolerances <\/strong><\/p><p>Food intolerance is a condition where the body has difficulty digesting certain foods or food ingredients.<\/p><p>For example &#8211; Lactose (milk sugar) intolerance &#8211; where the body does not have enough Lactase enzyme and may have problems breaking down the sugars in <a href=\"https:\/\/dietsabc.com\/en\/healthy-diet\/whether-dairy-products-are-good-or-bad\/\">dairy products<\/a>.<\/p><p>Food intolerances can cause stomach pain and other symptoms such as:<\/p><ul><li>Bloating.<\/li><li>Flatulence.<\/li><li>Diarrhoea.<\/li><\/ul><pre>\u00a0<\/pre><p><strong>11 Food poisoning <\/strong><\/p><p>Viral or bacterial food poisoning can cause abdominal pain, diarrhoea and vomiting.<\/p><p>Symptoms can start within minutes or a week or more after eating spoiled food. The duration of symptoms depends on the type of bacteria or virus ingested, but they often disappear on their own.<\/p><p>However.<\/p><p>If symptoms become severe or persist for several days &#8211; seek help in an emergency.<\/p><pre>\u00a0<\/pre><p><strong>12 Peptic ulcers <\/strong><\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/10350-peptic-ulcer-disease\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Peptic ulcers<\/a> are ulcers on the lining of the stomach, small intestine, or oesophagus.<\/p><p>Up to 70% of people with peptic ulcers do not notice any symptoms. The rest most often report the pain in the centre of the upper abdomen.<\/p><p>Other symptoms may include:<\/p><ul><li>Bloating.<\/li><li>Expectoration.<\/li><li>Feeling full too quickly when eating.<\/li><li>Feeling uncomfortable or nauseous after eating.<\/li><li>Vomiting.<\/li><\/ul><pre>\u00a0<\/pre><p>The most common causes of stomach and peptic ulcers are <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/21463-h-pylori-infection\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Helicobacter pylori bacteria<\/a> and excessive or prolonged use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen.<\/p><pre>\u00a0<\/pre><p><strong>13 Crohn&#8217;s disease <\/strong><\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/9357-crohns-disease\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Crohn&#8217;s disease<\/a> causes inflammation of the lining of the digestive tract and usually causes abdominal pain.<\/p><p>Other symptoms may include:<\/p><ul><li>Unexplained weight loss.<\/li><li>Diarrhoea.<\/li><\/ul><pre>\u00a0<\/pre><p>Symptoms may vary depending on the location and severity of the inflammation. Stress and certain foods can aggravate them, for example, spicy or caffeinated foods, alcoholic beverages, etc.<\/p><pre>\u00a0<\/pre><p><strong>14 Coeliac disease <\/strong><\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/14240-celiac-disease\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Coeliac<\/a> disease occurs when a person is allergic to <a href=\"https:\/\/dietsabc.com\/en\/food\/gluten-and-gluten-intolerance\/\">gluten<\/a> (a protein found in grains). Coeliac disease causes damage to the small intestine, which in turn can cause abdominal pain.<\/p><p>Other symptoms may include:<\/p><ul><li>Chronic diarrhoea.<\/li><li>Bloating.<\/li><li>Flatulence.<\/li><li>Lactose intolerance.<\/li><li>Nausea.<\/li><li>Vomiting.<\/li><\/ul><pre>\u00a0<\/pre><p><strong>15 Pulled or strained muscles <\/strong><\/p><p>Abdominal muscles are involved in many everyday activities and sometimes their tightness or injury causes pain.<\/p><p>Abdominal pain can also occur as a result of physical exercise, for example as a result of doing more squats than usual, etc.<\/p><p>The best remedy in such cases is rest or, in the case of severe pain, ice packs. If the pain persists for 2-3 days, consult your doctor.<\/p><pre>\u00a0<\/pre><p><strong>16 Menstrual cramps or endometriosis <\/strong><\/p><p>Menstruation can cause inflammation and abdominal pain. Menstruation can also cause bloating, gas, cramps and constipation.<\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/10857-endometriosis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Endometriosis<\/a> is a condition in which tissue that normally grows in the uterus develops in other parts of the body, typically in the pelvic area but sometimes elsewhere.<\/p><p>People with endometriosis may experience intense or mild abdominal or back pain during and between periods and, in some cases, severe menstrual cramps.<\/p><pre>\u00a0<\/pre><h2>Other causes of abdominal pain<\/h2><ul><li>Kidney infection.<\/li><li>Hepatitis.<\/li><li>Gastritis.<\/li><li>Ectopic pregnancy.<\/li><li>Infection or infarction of organs in the abdominal cavity (when an organ fails due to lack of blood supply).<\/li><li>Heart problems such as atypical angina or heart failure.<\/li><li>Cancer, in particular stomach, pancreatic or bowel cancer.<\/li><li>Hernias.<\/li><li>Cysts.<\/li><\/ul><pre>\u00a0<\/pre><h2>Stomach upset with no clear cause<\/h2><p>You have stomach pain, feel bloated and\/or overfed, are nauseous, have a squeezing or burning sensation in your abdomen&#8230;<\/p><p>The discomfort usually starts during a meal or maybe half an hour later.<\/p><p>If this happens often, you should consult your doctor.<\/p><p>If your doctor does not find any worrying symptoms &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/22248-functional-dyspepsia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">functional dyspepsia<\/a> is the most likely diagnosis, which means recurring stomach upsets for no obvious cause.<\/p><pre>\u00a0<\/pre><p>Functional dyspepsia does not usually have a medical solution either.<\/p><p>But.<\/p><p>Here are some approaches that can be very effective:<\/p><pre>\u00a0<\/pre><h3>Eat right<\/h3><ul><li>Eat a complete and <a href=\"https:\/\/dietsabc.com\/en\/healthy-diet\/balanced-nutrition\/\">balanced diet<\/a>, rich in fruit, vegetables, lean <a href=\"https:\/\/dietsabc.com\/en\/healthy-diet\/how-much-protein-do-we-need\/\">protein<\/a> and whole grains.<\/li><li>Avoid foods that trigger symptoms. Common culprits include caffeine, <a href=\"https:\/\/dietsabc.com\/en\/healthy-diet\/chocolate-healthy-or-unhealthy\/\">chocolate<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/dietsabc.com\/en\/healthy-diet\/alcohol-and-health\/\">alcohol<\/a> and spicy, acidic or fatty foods.<\/li><li>Eat less, but more often, so that the stomach does not expand and can empty quickly.<\/li><li>Do not skip meals (especially <a href=\"https:\/\/dietsabc.com\/en\/healthy-diet\/breakfast-to-eat-or-not-to-eat\/\">breakfast<\/a>).<\/li><li>Eat slowly and chew your food completely.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/dietsabc.com\/en\/diets\/why-you-should-drink-water\/\">Drink enough water<\/a>.<\/li><li>Avoid activities that cause swallowing excess air, like eating quickly, chewing gum, drinking fizzy drinks and smoking.<\/li><li>Avoid eating within two hours before going to bed.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/dietsabc.com\/en\/calorie-calculator-bmi-calculator-ideal-weight-calculator\/\">Maintain your weight at a healthy level<\/a>.<\/li><\/ul><pre>\u00a0<\/pre><h3>Move<\/h3><ul><li>Do 20 to 40 minutes of <a href=\"https:\/\/dietsabc.com\/en\/sport\/cardio-workout\/\">aerobic\/cardio exercise<\/a> three to five times a week &#8211;
