And now is the best time to put up a fight and get rid of those extra pounds for good!<\/p><pre>\u00a0<\/pre><h2>Why can&#8217;t I lose weight?<\/h2><p>There are only two real reasons:<\/p><ol><li>You are consuming more calories than your body needs &#8211; There is NO calorie deficit in your daily diet.<\/li><\/ol><p>Or.<\/p><ol start=\"2\"><li>You only think you are in a calorie deficit, but in fact, you are still regularly consuming too many calories.<\/li><\/ol><pre>\u00a0<\/pre><p>I don&#8217;t want to offend anyone with my disbelief, but the fact remains &#8211; we all live in a physical world and are subject to the <a href=\"https:\/\/dietsabc.com\/en\/weight-loss\/what-is-metabolism-and-how-does-it-work\/\">laws of physics<\/a>.<\/p><p>I often hear: &#8220;I have tried 100 times, I have counted, I have been eating only 900kcal for a year, but the weight is not changing &#8230;&#8221;.<\/p><pre>\u00a0<\/pre><p>You know, I have some unpleasant news for you &#8211; if you are not losing weight when you are in a calorie deficit, you are NOT in a calorie deficit. PERIOD.<\/p><pre>\u00a0<\/pre><p>Drop all resentment and disbelief, and just take a look at your menu.\u2800<\/p><p>No one has to live their whole life counting calories.<\/p><p>However.<\/p><p>If you TRULY want to get rid of weight for good, be healthy and feel good &#8211; you do need to learn to at least count what you eat and understand what it will or will not do for your body.<\/p><pre>\u00a0<\/pre><p>There is no other way. There just isn&#8217;t. And there won&#8217;t be.<\/p><pre>\u00a0<\/pre><p>Be honest. Not to me, or anyone else &#8211; to yourself. Count everything you put in your mouth. At least for a couple of months. Every last morsel &#8211; to find out how many calories are in a slice of bread or an innocent piece of dark chocolate.<\/p><p>Either you get serious about losing weight, or you make people laugh at your inability to lose excess weight with the excuse of incredible genetics and heredity &#8230;<\/p><pre>\u00a0<\/pre><h2>12 main reasons why you&#8217;re losing less weight than you expected<\/h2><p>If you&#8217;re trying to lose weight, you&#8217;re likely to lose quite a lot at first &#8211; and even without much effort.<\/p><p>However, after a while, the weight loss may slow down or stop altogether.<\/p><p>Here are the 12 most common reasons why you are unable to lose weight:<\/p><pre>\u00a0<\/pre><h3>1 Your body composition changes<\/h3><p>If you think you&#8217;re at a weight loss plateau, you shouldn&#8217;t start worrying right away.<\/p><p>The situation where the weight stays the same (or even increases slightly) for several days or weeks is quite common.<\/p><p>Weight loss plateaus can be explained by muscle gain, undigested food and body water fluctuations&#8230;\u00a0<\/p><p>In other words, if your weight does not change, you may still lose fat while your muscle mass increases.<\/p><pre>\u00a0<\/pre><p>If you have recently started exercising &#8211; your weight may even be increasing, as the increase in physical activity can cause temporary inflammation and damage to muscle fibres. This can happen for several reasons:<\/p><pre>\u00a0<\/pre><p><em><strong>You don&#8217;t watch what you eat<\/strong><\/em><\/p><p>Research shows that keeping track of your food intake helps with weight loss.<\/p><p>Specifically, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5568610\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">people who count calories in food diaries or take photos of their meals lose more weight than those who don&#8217;t<\/a>.<\/p><p>But.<\/p><p>It is important to note that counting eating can hurt people with eating disorders: calorie counting and food recording <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/28214452\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">can worsen potentially harmful side effects of eating disorders<\/a>.<\/p><pre>\u00a0<\/pre><p><em><strong>Binge eating<\/strong><\/em><\/p><p>Binge eating or overeating is eating more food than your body needs. This often happens unconsciously, e.g. I just threw a few nuts in my mouth or ate just one sweet, etc.<\/p><p>But.<\/p><ul><li>A handful of nuts (~50 g) contains ~300 Kcal.<\/li><li>One chocolate sweet ~60 Kcal.<\/li><\/ul><pre>\u00a0<\/pre><p>In comparison, a healthy, average-sized, non-overweight woman should consume ~1400 &#8211; 1600 Kcal per day, which is 3.6 to 5.3 handfuls of nuts.<\/p><pre>\u00a0<\/pre><p>Another common cause of overeating is <a href=\"https:\/\/dietsabc.com\/en\/healthy-diet\/emotional-eating-or-why-we-regularly-overeat\/\">emotional eating<\/a>. Even if you eat healthy foods (not <a href=\"https:\/\/dietsabc.com\/en\/healthy-diet\/healthy-and-unhealthy-food\/\">ultra-processed<\/a> and high in nutrients but low in calories) &#8211; you can still take in more calories than your body needs.<\/p><pre>\u00a0<\/pre><p>If you overeat often and for prolonged periods, consider consulting a nutritionist or sign up for my <a href=\"https:\/\/dietsabc.com\/en\/tievesanas-izaicinajums-15077\/\">weight loss challenges<\/a>.<\/p><pre>\u00a0<\/pre><p><em><strong>You eat too fast<\/strong><\/em><\/p><p>Modern life is fast-paced, we are in a hurry to get everything done, and therefore &#8211; we often eat too quickly.<\/p><p>The problem is that satiety comes slowly, and &#8211; when we eat fast &#8211; we quickly stuff ourselves with food before satiety sets in.<\/p><p>Mindful eating can help in this situation. It means slowing down, eating without distractions (not looking at your phone, computer, etc.), tasting and savouring every bite while listening to your body and stopping when you are full.<\/p><pre>\u00a0<\/pre><p>Several studies show <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/30570305\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">eating more slowly and mindfully can help prevent overeating and contribute to long-term weight loss<\/a>.<\/p><pre>\u00a0<\/pre><h3>3 You eat too little protein<\/h3><p>Protein is essential for weight loss because it helps you stay fuller for longer.<\/p><p>Various studies on high-protein diets have found that they can help reduce weight and, in addition, the risk of heart disease.<\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s42255-022-00699-2?utm_medium=affiliate&amp;utm_source=commission_junction&amp;utm_campaign=CONR_PF018_ECOM_GL_PHSS_ALWYS_DEEPLINK&amp;utm_content=textlink&amp;utm_term=PID100090071&amp;CJEVENT=4464c273baae11ee826100390a18b8f7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">High protein can also help prevent weight loss from regaining.<\/a><\/p><pre>\u00a0<\/pre><h3>4 You eat unhealthy food<\/h3><p>The quality of food is as important as the quantity eaten.<\/p><p>Eating wholesome (nutritious) food can improve your well-being and help regulate your appetite. Wholesome foods (<a href=\"https:\/\/dietsabc.com\/en\/healthy-diet\/healthy-and-unhealthy-food\/\">raw or minimally processed<\/a> and nutritious) are generally more filling than highly processed foods.<\/p><p>A good model for a nutritious and healthy diet is the <a href=\"https:\/\/dietsabc.com\/en\/diets\/mediterranean-diet\/\">Mediterranean diet<\/a>.<\/p><p>And another thing, many processed foods that are advertised as &#8221; healthy&#8221; are not.<\/p><p>Therefore.<\/p><p>Read the ingredients on the product labels and avoid foods that contain extra carbohydrates (sugar), salt or lots of different <a href=\"https:\/\/dietsabc.com\/en\/healthy-diet\/food-additives-and-e-numbers\/\">food additives or E-substances<\/a>.<\/p><pre>\u00a0<\/pre><h3>5 Your physical activity is insufficient<\/h3><p>Regular <a href=\"https:\/\/dietsabc.com\/en\/sport\/physical-activity-and-healthy-weight\/\">physical activity<\/a> can help you lose weight because:<\/p><ul><li>You burn more calories during physical activity.<\/li><li>Physical activity helps <a href=\"https:\/\/dietsabc.com\/en\/weight-loss\/how-to-speed-up-metabolism\/\">speed up your metabolism<\/a>.<\/li><\/ul><pre>\u00a0<\/pre><p>Aerobic exercise and <a href=\"https:\/\/dietsabc.com\/en\/sport\/14-proven-benefits-of-strength-training\/\">resistance\/strength training<\/a> have been shown in many studies to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8365736\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">effective in reducing weight<\/a>.<\/p><p>However.<\/p><p>80% of weight loss depends on what and how much you eat.<\/p><p>In other words, exercise is only effective when combined with a proper diet.<\/p><pre>\u00a0<\/pre><h3>6 You keep drinking sugar<\/h3><p>Sweetened drinks often make up a significant proportion of your daily calorie intake.<\/p><p>But.<\/p><p>They don&#8217;t make you feel full, so the calories you take in are not compensated by eating fewer other foods.<\/p><p>This is true not only for sugary drinks such as cola but also for &#8220;healthy&#8221; drinks such as vitamin water, <a href=\"https:\/\/dietsabc.com\/en\/sport\/energy-and-sports-drinks\/\">sports drinks<\/a>, etc., which are also full of sugar.<\/p><p>Even <a href=\"https:\/\/dietsabc.com\/en\/healthy-diet\/are-fruit-juices-healthy\/\">fruit juices<\/a> should not be consumed in large quantities. Studies show that <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/33487495\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">insufficient sleep<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/30107483\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sleeping too long are both linked to obesity<\/a>.<\/p><p>The recommended amount of sleep per night is 7-9 hours for adults, 8-10 hours for adolescents, 9-14 hours for children and 12-17 hours for infants.<\/p><pre>\u00a0<\/pre><h3>8 You don&#8217;t drink enough water<\/h3><p>Drinking water can contribute to weight loss as hydration can help speed up your metabolism.<\/p><pre>\u00a0<\/pre><p>A meta-analysis of six studies found that <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/31657610\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">increasing water intake increased average weight loss by 5.15%<\/a> (from 0.4 kg to 8.8 kg).<\/p><p>The simplest and most effective solution is to replace calorie-containing drinks with water.<\/p><p>But.<\/p><p>If you don&#8217;t like water &#8211; replace it with herbal teas or <a href=\"https:\/\/dietsabc.com\/en\/healthy-diet\/how-do-diet-sodas-affect-our-health\/\">diet cola<\/a>, etc.<\/p><p>Several nutritionists also recommend drinking a glass of water before a meal.<\/p><pre>\u00a0<\/pre><h3>9 You drink too much alcohol<\/h3><p>You know, alcohol has calories too, and those calories are <em>empty<\/em> ones.<\/p><p>Alcohol has even more calories than carbohydrates or protein:<\/p><ul><li>1 g of alcohol = 7 Kcal.<\/li><li>1 g of protein = 4 Kcal.<\/li><li>1 g of carbs = 4 Kcal.<\/li><li>1 g of fat = 9 Kcal.<\/li><\/ul><pre>\u00a0<\/pre><p>Alcohol consumption can also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/ncomms14014?utm_medium=affiliate&amp;utm_source=commission_junction&amp;utm_campaign=CONR_PF018_ECOM_GL_PHSS_ALWYS_DEEPLINK&amp;utm_content=textlink&amp;utm_term=PID100090071&amp;CJEVENT=57750939bad711ee802ff8a10a18ba72#Sec6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">negatively stimulate the appetite and promote hunger<\/a>.<\/p><p>If you really want to have a drink, the best option is to stick to spirits mixed with a calorie-free beverage. Beer, wine and sweetened spirits are very calorific.<\/p><pre>\u00a0<\/pre><h3>10 You eat too many ultra-processed foods<\/h3><p>You always have a choice:<\/p><ul><li>Eat <a href=\"https:\/\/dietsabc.com\/en\/healthy-diet\/healthy-and-unhealthy-food\/\">ultra-processed products<\/a> that are high in calories but have little or no nutrients (chips, crackers, cakes, sausages, etc.).<\/li><\/ul><p>Or.<\/p><ul><li>Eat raw or minimally processed foods, which, of course, contain calories as well but are also high in nutrients and fibre (poultry, porridge, fruits, vegetables, etc.).<\/li><\/ul><pre>\u00a0<\/pre><p>What is the difference?<\/p><p>With ultra-processed foods, you take in a lot of <em>empty<\/em> calories that don&#8217;t make you feel full.<\/p><p>But.<\/p><p>With raw or minimally processed foods you:<\/p><ul><li>Generally, take in fewer calories.<\/li><li>They are free of food additives and E-substances.<\/li><li>They supply your body with the nutrients it needs.<\/li><li>They give you a feeling of satiety.<\/li><\/ul><pre>\u00a0<\/pre><p>A meta-analysis in 2021 found that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8244111\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">at least 15% of children and adolescents meet the criteria for food addiction<\/a> (sugary drinks, chips, fast food&#8230;), with even higher rates among those who are already overweight or obese.<\/p><p>Adults are no exception: in a survey on healthy ageing, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthyagingpoll.org\/reports-more\/report\/addiction-highly-processed-food-among-older-adults\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">44% of older adults reported at least one symptom of addiction to ultra-processed foods<\/a>. The most common symptoms were:<\/p><ul><li>Strong cravings for an ultra-processed food.<\/li><li>Inability to reduce consumption of ultra-processed foods despite the desire to do so.<\/li><li>Recognition that their eating habits were causing them a lot of stress or other problems.<\/li><\/ul><pre>\u00a0<\/pre><p>If you have a strong craving for or addiction to ultra-processed foods, losing weight may be difficult or even impossible because eating less or changing your diet may seem beyond your reach.<\/p><p>Therefore.<\/p><p>Consider seeking professional help.<\/p><pre>\u00a0<\/pre><h3>11 You have a medical condition that makes it difficult to lose weight<\/h3><p>Some medical conditions can contribute to weight gain and make it much more difficult to lose weight, for example, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4911848\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hypothyroidism<\/a> (underactive thyroid) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6734597\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)<\/a>.<\/p><pre>\u00a0<\/pre><p>Also, some medications can make weight loss more difficult or cause weight gain. If you think this applies to you, talk to your doctor.<\/p><pre>\u00a0<\/pre><h3>12 Your expectations are not realistic<\/h3><p>Weight loss is usually a slow process.<\/p><p>That&#8217;s why.<\/p><p>Many people lose patience and give up because they feel that nothing they are doing is working.<\/p><p>Unrealistic expectations about what can be achieved with a nutritious diet and exercise lead them to look for various miracle cures \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/dietsabc.com\/en\/diets\/how-to-lose-weight-fast\/\">crash or fad diets<\/a>, slimming pills, teas&#8230; They flit from one diet to another, and weight loss becomes more and more difficult (the <a href=\"https:\/\/dietsabc.com\/en\/diets\/yo-yo-effect\/\">Yo-Yo effect<\/a>).<\/p><p>Weight loss is not a linear process. You often hit a plateau.
