Is it better to eat breakfast or not?<\/p><pre>\u00a0<\/pre><h2>Breakfast &#8211; the most important meal of the day<\/h2><p>Or maybe not?<\/p><p>The origin of the expression &#8220;Breakfast is the most important meal of the day&#8221; can be traced back to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/business\/archive\/2016\/06\/how-marketers-invented-the-modern-version-of-breakfast\/487130\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;Eat a Good Breakfast &#8211; Do a Better Job&#8221; marketing campaign launched by General Foods in 1944<\/a>, during which brochures promoting the importance of breakfast were distributed in grocery stores and radio advertisements claimed, &#8220;Nutrition experts say breakfast is the most important meal of the day&#8221;.<\/p><p>Breakfast was again named the most important meal of the day in the 1960s when the American nutritionist <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Adelle_Davis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Adelle Davis<\/a> claimed that to stay fit and avoid obesity, people must &#8220;Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a pauper&#8221;.<\/p><pre>\u00a0<\/pre><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2021\/06\/210615132207.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A study of 30,000 adults in 2021<\/a> found that 15% of adults skip breakfast regularly.<\/p><p>At the same time, many still consider breakfast to be the most important meal of the day, as it provides the body with vital nutrients that other meals do not or do not provide in sufficient quantities (calcium in milk, fibre in breakfast cereals, vitamins and minerals, vitamin C in fruit, etc.).<\/p><p>Many also believe that eating breakfast can contribute to weight loss.<\/p><pre>\u00a0<\/pre><p>But is breakfast really the most important meal of the day?<\/p><p>As with most nutrition questions, the answer is complicated. Some studies suggest that skipping breakfast is not harmful, but other studies suggest the opposite:<\/p><ul><li>On the one hand, eating regular meals and snacks (four to five meals a day) is more likely to provide our bodies with the energy and nutrients they need to function optimally.<\/li><li>On the other hand, if we get everything we need during the day, breakfast may not be the most important meal of the day and may be skipped.<\/li><\/ul><pre>\u00a0<\/pre><p>Here&#8217;s what the science says on this.<\/p><pre>\u00a0<\/pre><h2>Evidence supporting the benefits of eating breakfast<\/h2><p>It should be mentioned here that most of the studies on the benefits of eating breakfast are observational. That is &#8211; they indicate associations but cannot prove causality.<\/p><pre>\u00a0<\/pre><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8568444\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A 2021 systematic review of 14 observational studies<\/a> found that those who eat breakfast seven times a week have a lower risk of:<\/p><ul><li>Cardiovascular disease.<\/li><li>Diabetes.<\/li><li>Obesity.<\/li><li>Metabolic syndrome.<\/li><li>High blood pressure.<\/li><li>Stroke.<\/li><li>Abdominal obesity.<\/li><li>Increased low-density lipoprotein (<a href=\"https:\/\/dietsabc.com\/en\/weight-loss\/good-or-bad-cholesterol\/\">LDL cholesterol<\/a>) levels.<\/li><\/ul><pre>\u00a0<\/pre><p>This analysis of 14 studies finds that those who eat breakfast are less likely to develop the cardiovascular and metabolic diseases mentioned above, but it does not prove that skipping breakfast causes these diseases.<\/p><p>However.<\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/journals\/proceedings-of-the-nutrition-society\/article\/skipping-breakfast-is-associated-with-nutrient-gaps-and-poorer-diet-quality-among-adults-in-the-united-states\/C7943690D97E913FA19B936BFBDB0F2A\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">An analysis of data on more than 30,000 North Americans suggests that people who skip breakfast may not receive enough essential nutrients<\/a>.<\/p><p>The most common nutrients missing in those who skipped breakfast were:<\/p><ul><li>Folates.<\/li><li>Calcium.<\/li><li>Iron.<\/li><li>Vitamin A.<\/li><li>Vitamins B1, B2, B3.<\/li><li>Vitamin C.<\/li><li>Vitamin D.<\/li><\/ul><pre>\u00a0<\/pre><p>In addition, <a href=\"https:\/\/diabetesjournals.org\/care\/article\/40\/11\/1573\/36945\/Influences-of-Breakfast-on-Clock-Gene-Expression\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a study published in 2017<\/a> found that skipping breakfast causes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nigms.nih.gov\/education\/fact-sheets\/Pages\/circadian-rhythms.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">circadian rhythm<\/a> disorders.<\/p><p>Those who skipped breakfast also had higher blood glucose spikes after eating. Therefore, the study authors concluded that eating breakfast is essential for our internal clock to work properly.<\/p><pre>\u00a0<\/pre><h2>Does skipping breakfast cause weight gain?<\/h2><p>Although many people report feeling fuller throughout the day by eating breakfast, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8705113\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">research shows that both breakfast skippers and breakfast eaters consume almost the same number of calories during the day<\/a>.<\/p><pre>\u00a0<\/pre><p><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/24898236\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A 4-month randomised controlled trial<\/a> tested the effectiveness of eating or skipping breakfast on weight loss in 309 overweight or obese adults.<\/p><p>At the end of the study, the researchers concluded that eating or skipping breakfast had no significant effect on weight loss.<\/p><pre>\u00a0<\/pre><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/364\/bmj.l42\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A review of 13 randomised controlled trials published in 2019<\/a> found that eating breakfast may not be a good weight loss strategy as eating breakfast may increase calorie intake and, therefore, have the opposite effect.<\/p><p>However, it is noteworthy that this review had significant limitations, such as not including the types of foods consumed by participants (it makes a big difference whether one eats <a href=\"https:\/\/dietsabc.com\/en\/diets\/best-protein-sources\/\">protein<\/a>&#8211; and <a href=\"https:\/\/dietsabc.com\/en\/diets\/best-fiber-sources\/\">fibre<\/a>-rich or <a href=\"https:\/\/dietsabc.com\/en\/healthy-diet\/carbohydrates\/\">fast carbohydrate<\/a>-rich foods for breakfast), and the studies were relatively short.<\/p><pre>\u00a0<\/pre><p>In contrast, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ers.usda.gov\/amber-waves\/2020\/july\/skipping-breakfast-or-lunch-has-a-larger-impact-on-diet-quality-than-skipping-dinner\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study published in 2020<\/a> found that skipping breakfast can reduce total daily calorie intake by 252 calories, whereas skipping any meal reduces overall nutritional quality.<\/p><pre>\u00a0<\/pre><p>In other words, at present, there is no conclusive evidence linking eating or not eating breakfast to weight gain or weight loss.<\/p><pre>\u00a0<\/pre><h2>Are people who eat breakfast healthier?<\/h2><p>According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/translational-medicine.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/s12967-014-0348-1#Sec14\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2018 study<\/a>, those who eat breakfast often:<\/p><ul><li>Pay more attention to what they eat.<\/li><li>Exercise more regularly.<\/li><li>Manage stress better.<\/li><\/ul><pre>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/pre><p>In contrast, those who skip breakfast:<\/p><ul><li>Tend to engage in unhealthy habits such as smoking and drinking alcohol.<\/li><li>Their diets also tend to be higher in fat, cholesterol and calories.<\/li><\/ul><pre>\u00a0<\/pre><p>These results suggest that eating breakfast is significantly associated with a healthy lifestyle and that our lifestyle and dietary habits influence our health much more than eating or skipping breakfast.<\/p><pre>\u00a0<\/pre><h2>8 reasons why you should eat breakfast<\/h2><p>Breakfast is an important meal because it allows us to fuel our bodies with energy and nutrients.
